HISTORY OF LIONS
DISTRICT 12-I

Lionism began in the United States in 1917 when a group of independent clubs responded to an idea presented to them by a young Chicago insurance agent, Melvin Jones. The idea was one of service as a group to their fellow men without regard to politics, religion, race, or any of the personal interests of the members. This was heralded as a departure from the trend current at the time for forming clubs basically with a commercial motive. A conference was called of some 25 independent clubs on June 7, 1917 and from this meeting the organization was born.

OUR HISTORY

DISTRICT 12-I

Tennessee became a part of the International Association of Lions Clubs in 1918.  The tremendous growth of clubs and membership throughout the state brought about reorganization into two districts, and was identified as Multiple District 12 by the International Association of Lions Clubs.  The clubs and membership growth continued and a few years later Multiple District 12 reorganized into four districts, identified as Multiple District 12, L, I, O, and N.  Membership continued to grow, and just a few years later another district, S, was carved out of Districts I and O.

District 12-I, (this district) is situated pretty much in the center of the state.  Lions in this district provide a tremendous service to our communities, to the state of Tennessee and, in conjunction with Lions Club International, to the world.

District 12-I is proud to be a part of the world's largest service organization.  Over the years, the District has provided an International President, two directors to the International Board of Directors and many leaders at the District level.

This district has a long and proud record of community service, and the wonderful thing is - all Lions are volunteers.  There is no individual financial gain from any of the services we provide, only the self satisfaction of helping people in need is something money can't buy.

We are always interested in others joining us in our endeavor to help others.  Please contact a Lions Club in your area for additional information on how to sign up.
